For Couples Who Want Something Personal, Unhurried & Completely Their Own

Intimate Weddings

Not every wedding needs a grand ballroom, a hundred guests, or a schedule that starts at dawn and ends at midnight. Some of the most meaningful days I've ever filmed have been the quieter ones - a backyard in the afternoon light - a small garden venue with close family, a dinner for twenty where the speeches went long because everyone had something real to say.

Intimate weddings have a genuine quality to them. There's more room for the day to breathe. More space for the moments that don't need to be orchestrated - a hand held a little longer, laughter that travels across the whole room, the look between two people who know exactly what this day means to them.

These are the moments I live for as a filmmaker capturing a deeply meaningful day.

Aly & Austin's Cottage Wedding
Algonquin Provincial Park

Aly and Austin reached out because they'd seen my work and trusted me with their story. They live in the United States, and what they were planning was something deeply personal - a small, intimate wedding at the family cottage on Rock Lake in Algonquin Provincial Park. No road access. Boat in only. A few people and pets who mattered most, at a place that had been woven into their family's life for generations.

After a warm, bubbly call listening to their love story, passion, and beautiful plans for their cottage wedding, I said yes, absolutely!

Algonquin holds a special place in my own life - I've spent much of it paddling a tripping canoe deep into its backcountry wilderness. I know and treasure this place. When Aly's brother picked me up at the public dock and we puttered back across the lake, I already felt at home.

I spent two days with Aly & Austin. I listened to stories about the cottage - its history, what it meant to this family, why this was the only place in the world they wanted to say their vows. I took it all in firsthand. On our first afternoon together we hiked up nearby Booth Rock Trail, that wound through old forest and up to a high, sweeping panoramic lookout where the whole lake opened up below us, the cottage just a small white dot on the far western shore. The next morning Aly's mom motored us across the lake to a thirty-foot rock face, and watched as Aly - in her wedding veil - and Austin climbed up, counted to three together, and jumped into the lake below. So them! So fun!

That afternoon, Aly's mother helped her into her dress in the screened sunroom, the lake grey and soft behind them, the family dogs wandering in and out. Austin got ready in front of a mirror placed at the forest edge. Their ceremony took place at the water's edge beneath a handmade birch arch, officiated by Aly's brother, parents nearby. Just a few of the people who loved them most, standing amongst the trees.

That evening, candles and wine and a wedding cake for two under string lights in the dark in a little nook in the forest nearby. The couple enjoyed their wedding dance to Neil Young's romantic "Harvest Moon" playing softly in the background. That weekend, that day, belonged entirely to them - unhurried, magical, and completely unforgettable.

This is Aly & Austin's sweet, romantic, intimate wedding film.

"Eek! It’s here and it’s wonderful!  John, thank you so much for our film. We're beyond happy that we had you with us to capture our wedding! It was so awesome to go back to that day and experience it all over again - you totally captured it!  Thank you for including our special songs as well, we're completely giddy! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!"

How I film your intimate wedding

With a smaller gathering, my approach shifts naturally. I move gently and quietly through the day - unhurried, unobtrusive, never pulling focus from what's actually happening. With fewer distractions and a calm atmosphere, I can go deeper. The result is a film that doesn't just document your day - it captures the feeling of it. The warmth of the space. The faces of everyone who was there. The words that were spoken, and the ones that didn't need to be.

Every size celebration deserves a film worth keeping

Whether your guest list is eight people or fifty, I bring the same care, intention, artistry, and commitment to your film. Intimate weddings aren't a smaller version of something - they're their own thing entirely, and I love filming them. If you're planning something personal, unhurried, and deeply your own, I'd love to learn more...
