Cinematic Wedding Films at Toronto’s Iconic Waterfront Venue
There are venues that look great in photos. And then there are venues that change the feeling of the entire day. Palais Royale is both.
Sitting right on the Lake Ontario shoreline just west of downtown, it’s one of those rare places in Toronto where the setting does something to people – they arrive, feel the space and the water and the history of it, and they relax in a way that makes everything that follows feel more genuine and more alive. That’s not nothing when it comes to wedding film. That’s everything.
I’ve filmed many weddings at Palais Royale and it’s consistently one of my favourite venues in the city to work in. Here’s a look at what makes it so special – and two celebrations that show exactly what’s possible here.
Real Weddings at Palais Royale
Kristy & Casey | A Joyful Summer Celebration
Every wedding has its own personality. Some are deeply ceremonial. Some are intimate and quiet. And some – the ones you find yourself thinking about long afterward – manage to be completely polished and completely themselves at the same time. Kristy and Casey’s wedding was that kind of day.
The morning began on opposite sides of the city, which suited them perfectly. Kristy spent the hours before the ceremony at home in Oakville, surrounded by her bridesmaids and family – that easy, unhurried energy that comes from getting ready somewhere familiar and loved. Casey and his groomsmen gathered at the Park Hyatt in Toronto, where the mood was relaxed and lighthearted from the start. Casey happens to play forward for the New York Islanders in the NHL, and fellow NHLer Matt Martin was part of the wedding party – though if you’d walked into that room that morning, you’d have simply seen a groom and his closest friends enjoying the hours before everything changed. Warm, easy, full of laughter. It set a tone the whole day kept.
Their ceremony took place at Trinity Chapel at Trinity College, University of Toronto – and if you haven’t been inside, it’s one of those spaces that stops you. Soaring stone ceilings, beautiful stained glass, natural light arriving from every direction. It’s a chapel that asks the day to rise to meet it, and Kristy and Casey’s ceremony did exactly that. When Kristy walked down the aisle, the whole room seemed to hold its breath. Elegant, emotional, and deeply meaningful.
When they emerged from the chapel doors, their guests were waiting. What followed was a joyful confetti tunnel that captured the spirit of the day in about fifteen seconds – pure celebration, completely unscripted.
From Trinity, they headed to Philosopher’s Walk and the surrounding University of Toronto grounds for portraits. It’s one of the city’s hidden gems – quiet stone pathways, mature trees, historic facades, and a sense of calm that exists right in the middle of a major urban university. Timeless in the best possible way.
Their reception at Palais Royale was exactly what Kristy and Casey are – generous, warm, energetic, and absolutely full of life. Rachel Clingen’s florals had transformed the ballroom, filling the space with an abundance of stunning colour and texture that gave every frame something beautiful to work with. The grand entrances were a highlight – the wedding party leaned fully into the moment with performances and energy that had the entire room laughing before the couple even arrived. Then heartfelt speeches, incredible dancing, and a room full of people who were genuinely, visibly ecstatic to be there. The lake outside. The city behind them. A perfect night.
“John, we just watched our wedding film!!! You did SUCH an amazing job!!! Had me in tears!! Thank you so much!”

Carly & Alex | A Summer Wedding on the Lakeside Deck
Every wedding has its own personality.
Some weddings unfold exactly as they should – every detail considered, every moment landing with the weight it deserves, and a couple at the centre of it all who are completely, genuinely present for all of it. Carly and Alex’s summer Jewish wedding was that kind of day.
Both got ready at their respective family homes that morning, which gave the day an intimacy and warmth from the very first frame. Alex’s brother helped him with his jacket and tie – one of those quiet brotherly moments that says more in ten seconds than a speech ever could. A bubbly toast with his groomsmen followed, and then a card arrived from Carly that made him smile in the way only she can. Across the city, Carly shared her morning with her mom and sister before a backyard reveal with her bridesmaids that was pure joy – their reactions exactly what you’d hope for. Then a private first look with Alex in the same backyard, just the two of them, before the day truly began.
Their Bedeken took place inside Palais Royale’s front lounge – that beautiful, intimate pre-ceremony tradition where the groom veils his bride after they sign their Ketubah, surrounded by family. In that elegant lobby space, with everyone gathered close, it was one of those moments that sets the emotional tone for everything that follows. By the time it was over, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.
Their ceremony was held outside on the lakeside deck – and if you’ve seen what that deck looks like set for a Jewish ceremony, you’ll understand why it’s one of the most extraordinary settings in Toronto. A beautifully draped chuppah adorned with florals by Creations by Gitta stood at the water’s edge, the lake stretching out behind them and the Toronto skyline in the distance. Guests were seated on the deck facing the water, the summer sun warm and the breeze off the lake carrying everything perfectly. It was exactly the kind of ceremony setting that makes you stop and just appreciate where you are.
Cocktail hour followed on the deck in the warm summer evening – guests mingling with the lake right there, the city humming quietly in the background. Then the ballroom doors opened and the St. Royals band set the tone immediately. Their energy throughout the evening was exceptional – the kind of live music that fills a room in a way a DJ simply can’t, and that lifts every moment it touches. The joyful grand entrances, the hora, the first dance, the parents’ dances – all of it carried by that extraordinary music and the genuine love in the room.
“Working with John was a pleasure and we’d highly recommend him! From our first meeting, we knew right away he’d do an incredible job. On our wedding day, he captured every special moment from getting ready through to the celebration that night. We were in awe as we received our different video clips, allowing us to relive the most special day. If you’re looking for a wedding videographer, we highly recommend John!”

What Makes Palais Royale Film So Beautifully
There’s a particular quality of light at Palais Royale that I think about before every wedding I film there.
The ballroom’s large windows face the lake, which means the natural light that fills the space during the day has a softness and direction to it that’s genuinely flattering – for people, for florals, for all the details couples spend months choosing. During cocktail hour and the early reception, the light shifts gradually as the sun moves over the water, and that transition from bright afternoon to warm golden evening happens right there through the windows, entirely on its own. You just point the camera at it.
Step outside those windows and down the staircase from the upper walkway and you arrive at something genuinely unique in Toronto – a beautiful two-tiered lakeside deck sitting right at the water’s edge. I can’t think of another venue in the city that puts you this close to Lake Ontario. There are couple of other venues overlooking the lake, but they don’t have this. This deck is where cocktail hours take on a completely different quality, where guests gather along the railing with the lake stretching out in front of them and the city skyline framing the horizon behind. And for ceremonies held out here – chairs lined up facing the water, Toronto rising in the distance – it’s one of the most dramatic and genuinely moving ceremony settings I’ve filmed anywhere. The footage from that deck has a quality that no interior space can replicate.
Outside the deck, the lakeside paths just west of the venue are among the most quietly beautiful portrait locations in the city. No competing architecture, no traffic noise – just water, greenery, and that unhurried atmosphere that lets couples exhale and simply be together for a few minutes before the reception pulls them back in. Those moments along the lake consistently produce some of the most genuine, unguarded footage of the entire day.
The ballroom itself is generous and versatile. High ceilings mean sound carries beautifully – speeches land with real presence, live bands fill the room naturally, and the energy of a full dance floor builds in a way that feels genuinely cinematic. Palais Royale’s been hosting Toronto’s finest celebrations since the 1920s, and that history is woven into the walls in a way that newer venues simply can’t replicate. It’s earned its reputation, celebration by celebration, for close to a century.
Why Couples Choose Palais Royale
It comes down to three things really…
The location. Being right on the water creates a sense of openness and ease that changes the atmosphere of the whole day – especially for summer weddings. Guests feel like they’ve gone somewhere special without having left the city, and that energy carries through everything that follows.
The ballroom. It’s refined and classic without being stiff or formal – which means it works beautifully across a wide range of wedding styles. Whether you’re planning an elegant black-tie evening or a high-energy dance floor celebration, the space rises to meet it.
And the balance. Palais Royale is still fully in Toronto – guests can get there easily, and the city’s skyline is right there in the background. But the lakefront setting gives the day a feeling of remove that makes it feel like its own world. That’s a genuinely difficult thing to find.
Every wedding here has its own personality, and that’s exactly what makes filming here so rewarding. The venue provides the setting. The story is always entirely yours.
Planning a Wedding at Palais Royale?
If you’re considering Palais Royale for your Toronto wedding and looking for a videographer who knows the venue well – the light, the flow, the moments the lakeside creates – I’d love to hear about your plans.
By the way, if you’re exploring other Toronto-area waterfront wedding venues with a similar sense of history and outdoor character, my post on Harding Waterfront Estate and showcases another waterfront estate-style setting, and this one on Guild Inn Estate highlights another iconic waterfront venue – both film beautifully along the Lake Ontario shoreline.
